Burning is actually the proper way of disposing of the Quran. The people burning the Quran were doing what they should’ve done according to Islamic teachings. This whole story is so ironic

Edit: I have to correct myself. I’ve since learned that burning the Quran actually is a bad thing when it’s done out of malice. According to Islam, Qurans should only be burned (or otherwise destroyed) if they’re already damaged in some way, and done in a respectful manner.

It's really no different than flags. Burning flags is to show complete contempt of what the flag stands for, but the official way to retire a flag is to burn it. Intent is the key point for things like this.

The guys were obviously trying to get a rise out of the muslims they drove past while burning it. They got the reaction they were looking for I suppose. I'm not sure what they were expecting to happen, but a conflict of some sort was definitely their plan with that stunt. The women are insane to choose attempted murder for it though.

Yes, in the Norwegian military I was taught we were supposed to burn the flag if it touched the ground even once. In practice though I don't think many flags were burned.

I don't condone any violence but I really hate reddits views of burning the quran. Your text made it easier for me to contextualize my point.

How would reddit be reacting if this was people burning israels flag in front of a group of jews. I'm pretty sure the comment section wouldn't be full of people saying that that is the proper way of disposing the flag...

There is a reason we have anti-hate speech laws, protecting everyones right to speak will often lead to the most hateful and angry discourse ruling the public square by force.

If you go out of your way to find people and destroy something sacred to their religion in front of them, you're risking a violent response.

Imagine if someone just stabbed him in the dark and killed him. It might not be a crime to burn and but it was his fault too being disrespectful. It's amazing how the U.S. Flag has exactly the same "rules" and is worshipped more than any book... According to U.S. law, flag burning is actually the proper way to respectfully dispose of a "retired" flag. If you light one in protest, everyone loses their mind.

In a sense, yes. The book was already damaged at that point, so the proper thing to do would be destroying it. But considering the damage was done with malice, I’d imagine the lines are a bit blurred in this situation.

Islamic teachings aside, I’m gonna drop some Logic teachings. If you see someone burning a religious book to provoke a reaction, the only reaction you should give is laughter and judgment, because they just wasted money on a book and a lighter only to make a fool of themselves (or in this case, total their car. Good luck explaining that one to your car insurance)

So wouldn’t you think the Quran would have the same mistakes as the bible?. Also notice the quotation marks around the bible, yeah that’s because there is no one bible that exists out there… while the Quran has been unchanged for 14 centuries.

So I will take a step back and apologize to you, as I thought i was replying to the other person, which again I apologize to him as well.(that’s what my religion teaches me) As for the Quran, it wasn’t made up by Muhammed, there’s concrete historical evidence of how he was an illiterate merchant that couldn’t read or write. As for me following that doctrine… I never said I fully agreed with everything in the Quran, it was written in a different time and period so obviously there are outdated ideologies. However the core of Islam is still the same, which remains a religion of peace and hospitality despite all the fanatics that would have you think otherwise. I just wish the west would stop the hypocrisy, when Christianity is arguably a religion of war that destroyed my country and many other countries, but the difference between me and you is that i can separate the actions of the few and the majority. As 99% of Christians I’ve met are amazing people, so I would like for other people to look at muslims the same way i do other religions.

Part of the big difference is how those texts are used by the religions as a whole. The Quran considers later parts to be more important (similar to the Bible). However, where the Bible progressed and has the parts about forgiveness, love, acceptance, charity, etc... in the back half, the Quran has more dogmatic persecutive law in the back half. So the parts with the most theological weight are the parts that cause the most issues.

It does, yet their followers aren't rioting and committing attempted murder for burning the Bible. Even the most fervent supporters in the states, as unhinged and gun happy they are won't stoop as low as a Muslim in Scandinavia. You can even see videos of people going up to Christians in anti-abortion protests, make an absolute fool of them and they still won't pull a knife on you, break a window or attempt to run you off the road (you'd have to go back to the early 20th or before to find stories of that nature). You can try to lump them all together as "religion bad" and we know its a weak attempt to apologize for their behavior but there's a clear cut difference.

The problem here is that you cannot fall back on the tired old excuses for their behavior here. Norway never had institutionalized racism since their minority population is fairly new, theres no generations of oppressed people, most of them came on this side of the millenium. You can't say it's no access to education and welfare (Norway offers both some of the best in the world).

At the end though I agree with you, religion is a poison and hopefully Norway can dilute the Islam the same way it diluted Christianity.

Sometimes a violent response is justified or even necessary.
