serious q: reddit subs in general have been pro 'fuck around and find out,' does this fall under that? For example there's a video of a drunk guy calling someone the N-word and he gets knocked out, people are all like 'fuck around and find out!'

Same deal here? Or different because religious fanatics.

Should they have done that? No.

Should they go to jail? Yes.

Do I feel bad for the guys who got their car flipped? Absolutely not. They wanted to start a fight, and a fight got started.

Reddit doesn’t like attempted murderers. Also there is a trend in Europe of Muslims extremists reacting violently to basically nothing, like when that French teacher was beheaded, and riots in Denmark or Sweden I believe. This precedent has led to much less patience for Muslim extremists/Muslims acting out, and honestly rightfully so. All religious fanatics should be disparaged.

Not a muslim: but this to me looks like fuck around and find out. It was clearly done out of hate for a certain group of people, those people responded just more violently. Both parties are in the wrong imo, one just more than the other.

But if it was a bible people would cheer them on. I think burning a book may it be a bible or another religious text should be possible without a violent response like this.

Edit: Of course I also understand that they burned it to provoke a response and they probably aren't good people. But it is still the responsibility of the women to contain themselves. However insulting it may be to them and their religion.

Yeah no, it does not work like that. Firstly, what kind of discrimination is happening in this video? These guys are just burning a book infront of everyone. Not just muslims but also other people. Yeah they probably are trying to be insulting to muslims. But my whole point was that they didn't directly threaten or attack any people and thus they can't be attacked.

This simply isn't justifiable from any point of view. Violence can't be used in response to insults. Threats are a different story though.

I agree; innocent people could’ve been hurt on that highway. The sad thing is that most people here don’t condemn the perpetrators; in fact, most people don’t even think what these people did is a hate crime.

I have literally just saw a sub teacher slamming a student for calling him the N word, and the comment section was waaaay different. So, I would say that the fuck around and find out is eclipsed here by islamophobia.

Again; I agree that endangering innocent people’s lives is worse.

I really want to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you just lack cultural sensitivity due to a lack of knowledge/familiarity (as we all do sometimes), but I honestly can’t help but feel that you are actually familiar with topic, you see the hate in this, and you don’t mind it.

That’s fine; none of us is perfect, and we all did/said something that later on we realized how stupid it was.

Human spit is extremely dangerous. That's why it's assault to spit on someone. Someone burning something they own, unless it's alive or money (burning money is a crime), doesn't hurt you in any way. I was going to escalate the argument by saying "how about I..." but that's unnecesary.

My apologies; the example wasn’t personal at all, it was meant to provide you with an equivalent example of an act that in your culture you may find insulting and offending (especially if it is motivated by a racist bias) to give you a sense of what it feels like for others.

Also, the dangerous part of the spit is just a technicality; I bet you would feel the same whether it is safe or not.

The idea here: if one billion people let you know that they find something extremely insulting and that it touches to a big part of their identity, you probably should start condemning such hatred-spreading acts.

Agreed, I think people just pick and choose when something is categorized that way. Me personally I think that going out of your way to incite hate to someone and expecting them to not react is stupidity.

I see a lot of people who will see a non white person react to racism, sometimes even in subs literally existing purely for violence and all of a sudden everybody in the comment section are pacifists who dont believe in violence. Its honestly hilarious.

Thats not me justifying the violence that comes out of it but it should be expected. I wouldn’t walk up to someone and call them a slur and expect them to not rock my shit. I wouldn’t walk up to a Jewish person and throw up a nazi salute and expect anything other than violence.

I would say it’s nearly identical with the exclusion that one is targeted at a group of people, while the other is very specifically targeting an individual.

Burning the book you own is an act against the book. Some may take offense to that, see video.

Verbal aggression at an individual, though, is a crime. You’ve essentially selected someone who will be a victim, you’re acting directly at them with intent.

The retaliation in both cases is very different. But I’d still file them both under FAaFO because in both cases, they SHOULD know what the outcomes will be.

Both parties fucked around and found out. As much as I hate this shit head burning the Quran, they aren't dehumanizing someone. And a punch would be way different from risking the lives of everyone on the road and the occupants of both cars. In fact sadly all these women did was prove that shit head right about religious extremism, not that his own brand is any better.

in one instance, a person gets called a derogatory and dehumanizing word associated with a long and painful history of racial injustice because of the colour of their skin. in the other instance, a book gets burnt, as a sort of protest, i assume. the motivation behind this protest is unknown to me (perhaps someone else knows more about the context), but there are several different possibilities: it could be mere xenophobia, but it could also be legitimate criticism of oppressive values associated with this religion or religion in general.

there is no context in which the first instance could be seen as a legitimate protest against an oppressive moral system.

furthermore, in the first instance, no uninvolved parties were endangered. in the second one, you literally have people going batshit crazy on the highway.

so yeah, a few differences there..
