Discussion DMV report on Cruise collision with Muni bus
A Cruise autonomous vehicle ("Cruise AV"), operating in driverless autonomous mode, was traveling on westbound Haight Street between Ashbury Street and Masonic Avenue. At the same time, a San Francisco Municipal Railway (“MUNI”) Bus stopped ahead of the Cruise AV. Shortly thereafter, the Cruise AV made contact with the rear bumper of the MUNI Bus, damaging the front fascia and front fender of the Cruise AV. The parties exchanged information. There were no reported injuries and the Cruise AV was towed from the scene.

Discussion Ford withdraws self-driving vehicle petition
Ford withdraws self-driving vehicle petition
WASHINGTON — Ford Motor Co. has withdrawn its petition to deploy a limited number of self-driving vehicles without traditional driving controls or features on U.S. roads, an unpublished federal document shows.
In the notice, which is scheduled to be published Friday, NHTSA said Ford has withdrawn its July 2021 request for a temporary exemption from certain federal safety standards for a vehicle equipped with an automated driving system.
Ford sought an exemption from seven safety standards to deploy vehicles that would be used to support mobility services such as ride-sharing and package delivery, according to the petition.
Ford notified NHTSA in February of its decision to withdraw the petition.
If it had been approved, it would have allowed Ford to deploy up to 2,500 self-driving vehicles annually.

Discussion Has there been any kind of update from Cruise about the bus collision?
I’ve looked, but not found anything. I’m nervous that the issue that caused the vehicle to strike the bus could result in additional collisions that may not be as harmless. If the vehicle strikes a bus, it seems plausible that it could strike a stroller.
Im a bit disappointed that they have continued driverless operations without releasing information to assuage the concerns that many of us in SF hold. Either they don’t know what happened, which means their operations are unsafe, or they know what happened and aren’t telling anyone, which is a disturbing lack of transparency.
I’m no expert - I don’t even work in tech, let alone self driving cars - so apologies if my comments are off-base or ignorance. I just see their cars all the time, and it makes me very nervous to be near them ever since the bus crash. I’m hoping that some of the experts here can share some context that will allow me to feel a bit more at ease…

Review/Experience I recently had the opportunity to test drive—or test ride, I guess—an autonomous vehicle made by Wayve.
I personally love the chance to get behind the wheel and go for a drive – it’s both fun and meditative. But in London’s bustling downtown, I was happy to relinquish control in the passenger seat of an autonomous vehicle, even if the experience was also totally surreal. (We did have a safety driver in the car just in case, and she had to grab the wheel and take over several times.) It’s not clear yet which approaches will be the most successful, since we’re only approaching the threshold where cars become truly autonomous. But once we get there, what will the transition to AVs actually look like? Even once the technology is perfected, people might not feel comfortable riding in a car without a steering wheel at first. But the benefits—from improving road safety to saving time to combatting climate change and more—are hard to ignore. Humanity has adapted to new modes of transportation before, and I believe we will do it again.

News Waymo Vehicles Now Audibly Deter Interfering Pedestrians
Waymo vehicles can now audibly warn people, who are messing with that respective vehicle, to move away. These voice prompts can escalate if the person(s) don’t move away. I think this is a really good idea that Waymo has acted on because they seem to get a lot of “interruptions.”

Discussion New Kia EV9 coming with level 3 autonomous driving
All the tech and features in the all-electric Kia EV9 SUV | TechCrunch
Firstly, thumbs up on the deisgn!
But not much is said about the level 3 driving, and I wonder how often drivers will be able to use it, and it compares to the recent Mercedes level 3. Also, would you agree level 3 still falls under ADAS because, at least conditionally, the car is fully driving itself.
