I miss Carnegie's in NYC...I'm glad I was able to go twice before it closed.

22

u/Thecryptsaresafe Feb 06 '23

Carnegie was great. Thankfully Katz’s, 2nd Ave Deli, Shelsky’s, and a few others are still putting out good products

4

u/currently__working Feb 06 '23

Somehow I never tried Katz, gotta get there sometime.

u/LiteVolition Feb 06 '23

You’re obviously not a New Yorker. This is not stupid it’s awesome as a once a year feast.

34

u/Dpontiff6671 Feb 06 '23

I love pastrami sandwiches but the ratio of ingredients is just off to me. I think it would be better tasting if they just made it into 2 more regular sized sandwiches

8

u/BoobPickles Feb 07 '23

New York has thin pizza insecurities so I guess they gotta make comically inedible meat stacks for sandwiches to compensate.

5

u/Dpontiff6671 Feb 07 '23

But the thin pizza is so good though

-6

u/PomegranateBasic3671 Feb 06 '23

Very much not a New Yorker, why is there so much? Is it even meat? Why does it look raw?

Not even knocking it, I'm genuinely curious.

30

u/Thecryptsaresafe Feb 06 '23

It’s not raw, pastrami is pink like that. It’s cooked slowly, the fat renders and runs succulently over the rest of the peppery meat as it’s piled high on pieces of seeded rye bread. Some slather some quality brown mustard, preferably grainy and made by the deli. Some elect to go for a non-kosher route a la OP and get a Reuben sandwich that includes sauerkraut, dressing, and Swiss cheese.

Why so much? Decadence, pure meaty lovey decadence. And why shouldn’t you? It’s a treat, a way to reward yourself on rare occasions similarly to a thanksgiving feast or a big southern cookout.

6

u/PomegranateBasic3671 Feb 06 '23

Yeah for sure, it looks tasty. To my taste it would be too much meat to be balanced, even if you're doing it for the treat (to each his own though, nothing wrong).

Yeah got corrected on the meat in another comment as well, I guess the sideview made it look like ground beef at a glance.

-4

u/Chewyk132 Feb 06 '23

You can’t say to your taste it’s too much, it looks like that but when you actually try it for yourself you realize it’s just fine.

5

u/PomegranateBasic3671 Feb 06 '23

Can't argue with that, it looks like too much but who knows.

2

u/JacenSolo_SWGOH Feb 06 '23

Reading your description made my stomach growl

4

u/Thecryptsaresafe Feb 06 '23

Some men are baptists, some are Catholics, but I’m a deli man

9

u/LiteVolition Feb 06 '23

It is even meat. Cured and smoked meats appear pink from the brining process. Think ham.

Nobody is supposed to eat the whole thing. It’s fun and guaranteed leftovers.

1

u/PomegranateBasic3671 Feb 06 '23

Maybe the picture is just weird, but it really looked like just raw ground beef.

I imagine it's delicious, but a bit too many slices for my taste (even if some of it is to take home).

Is it like a "tradition" or a local delicacy?

5

u/Groovatronic Feb 06 '23

Pastrami and corned beef are neither a "tradition" nor a local delicacy. They are simply two different types of cured meat that can be found all over the US. They're both really good and similarly salty and spicy.

https://www.thepioneerwoman.com/food-cooking/cooking-tips-tutorials/a38504292/pastrami-vs-corned-beef/

2

u/PomegranateBasic3671 Feb 06 '23

Oh yeah I meant the entire construction of the sandwich (I guess a bit like a Philly cheese steak is a distinctly American thing, although the meat, bread and cheese in it might not be).

2

u/Groovatronic Feb 06 '23

Ah yeah in that case you’re right - I thought you were referring to just the meat itself.

Yeah it’s a tradition and a local thing for New York delis to overload their sandwiches.

I live in LA and there’s actually quite a bit of pastrami around here too, but only one place that I know of piles it high. And it’s a New York style Jewish deli.

2

u/PomegranateBasic3671 Feb 06 '23

Ah cool, but yeah the type of meat is delicious especially with mustard or horseradish.

1

u/atomictest Feb 07 '23

It’s not raw, it’s cured

-1

u/kamika_c_1980 Feb 07 '23

i'm not american so... yep :D

33

u/justsomedude322 Feb 06 '23

Have you never been to a kosher or kosher style deli? Big sandwiches (usually called Zaftig size) are pretty common!

7

u/Unlikely_Weird_1473 Feb 06 '23

And the Angels did sing....

62

u/SweetzDeetz Feb 06 '23

Looks great, no reason to post this here

28

u/iBeenie Feb 06 '23 edited Feb 06 '23

It's a sandwich. How tf are you supposed to eat it? Yay, meat, but give me a manageable sandwich. Stacking a bunch of meat up to make it impossible to bite through isn't impressive, it's dumb.

Edit: y'all bragging about your big mouths

12

u/Dreadful_Crows Feb 06 '23

Some of these places have a "pickle bar" where there are stacks of bread slices for you to make smaller sandwiches with.

8

u/Arciousthedestroyer Feb 06 '23

You grab it with your hands and bite it with your mouth.

1

u/MilkuTea Feb 07 '23

but like... how? ive never had one of these or seen anyone eat them, so how do you handle it?

1

u/Alone-Remove Feb 07 '23

Snake hybrid comment here.

10

u/youngbloodoldsoul Feb 06 '23

With two hands and a fuckin' mouth, that's how.

12

u/DW-4 Feb 06 '23

Exactly, I don't understand the trend of piling sandwiches and burgers with so much shit that you would have to be able to unhinge your jaw to bite.

The one behind it looks ever more ridiculous.

9

u/issapunk Feb 06 '23

This isn't really a trend bc they've been making these sandwiches in NYC for decades. My main problem is the bread they use is just untoasted and they literally will give your table an entire loaf of bread to make your own sandwich.

4

u/c0l0r51 Feb 06 '23

Not to forget that it literally fcks up the composition. Like, you will literally just eat pastrami without any condiments or toppings if you bite this thing at the right part.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '23

This isn’t a trend.

These kinda sandwiches have been around for a long ass time.

1

u/DW-4 Feb 06 '23

Ok, second redditor who felt the need to point this out. These kinds might have been around a long time in certain areas, but you have to admit there has been a more recent trend of throwing everything in the kitchen on a burger or sandwich just to make it 'unique' and giant. How many of those do we see posted in this sub. Pretty sure you could've figured out what I meant easily.

I don't see an egg, fried cheese patty, crispy onions, 2 lbs of bacon, avacado, and fuckin pasta salad in that sandwich.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '23

People are allowed to point things on on Reddit

1

u/kamika_c_1980 Feb 07 '23

true, i can't even eat a regular burger normally lol

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '23

2 hands and a mouth? Teeth help as well to mash it up so it’s easier to swallow.

1

u/gahidus Feb 07 '23

You got a neck, don't you? Tilt your head.

1

u/iBeenie Feb 07 '23

Totally forgot that will allow my jaw to unhinge like a snake...

1

u/gahidus Feb 07 '23

Not necessary. You just bite into the corner. You don't have to unhinge your jaw anymore than you would eating a taco.

1

u/iBeenie Feb 07 '23

I've never met a taco that was 6 inches thick.

1

u/gahidus Feb 07 '23

And yet it is essentially shaped like a wedge. You bite into the leading edge of it.

1

u/iBeenie Feb 07 '23

WTF are you talking about? The dimensions of that sandwich is nothing like that of a taco.

1

u/gahidus Feb 07 '23

The strategy remains the same. You turn your head and you bite into the leading edge of it.

It's wedge shaped.

Just like you turn your head sideways to bite into a hard shelled taco, you turn your head sideways to bite into this sandwich.

6

u/CommandOfMyself Feb 06 '23

There's coleslaw and mustard....

1

u/cernegiant Feb 06 '23

Are you blind?

-9

u/kamika_c_1980 Feb 06 '23

there's far too much meat on this

3

u/SweetzDeetz Feb 06 '23

To you

2

u/c0l0r51 Feb 06 '23

No, to anyone with relevant taste buds. This looks like a 6 yo wanted to improve a sandwich by just putting more of "the good stuff" on it.

3

u/cernegiant Feb 06 '23

You have no idea what you're talking about.

2

u/c0l0r51 Feb 06 '23

If you bite this idiotsandwhich at the right position you are literally biting a glob of meat without any condiments or toppings or bread....

2

u/cernegiant Feb 06 '23

With the smallest amount of care that never happens.

2

u/c0l0r51 Feb 06 '23

That is not the point. The point is, that this fails it's purpose as a sandwich and it has brain-dead proportions.

1

u/kamika_c_1980 Feb 06 '23

lol okay obviously i'm not used to food like this. i won't apologise tho lol 😅

0

u/cernegiant Feb 06 '23

No there isn't.

1

u/Thecryptsaresafe Feb 06 '23

This is a New York tradition not a weird trend. These massive deli sandwiches have been around basically as long as there have been Jewish delis in NY (and elsewhere

40

u/desire_oftheendless Feb 06 '23

NEW YORK!!! deal with it 😎

5

u/TantalizingRavioli Feb 06 '23

It's not just a New York thing. Search up the Montreal smoked meat sandwich.

4

u/CatchACrab Feb 07 '23

Montreal smoked meat is better than New York pastrami. No contest.

3

u/TantalizingRavioli Feb 07 '23

Basically anything New York is known for is a pale imitation of something better

36

u/Experimentallyintoit Feb 06 '23

Tell us you’ve never been to New York with telling us you’ve never been to New York

1

u/kamika_c_1980 Feb 06 '23

i've never been to the states :D

7

u/kamika_c_1980 Feb 06 '23

okay guys, obviously i've been missing out on the world. if i ever go to the states and new york apparently (welp i know nothing rip) i'll eat one and wisen up. thanks everyone for calling me out on this. i feel enlightened

2

u/Dixnorkel Feb 07 '23

Appreciate your open mindedness but don't worry this is still stupid, the only people who will defend this have never left new York because their feet were removed and they might even be blind at this point.

3

u/Phatpantz Feb 06 '23

Jesus….sodium bomb

3

u/billydthekid Feb 06 '23

These are NY Jewish delis that serve the stack of meat with a loaf of bread so the whole table makes a sandwich.

3

u/Rucks_74 Feb 07 '23

Oh god here come the new yorkers defending their terrible terrible sandwiches

12

u/cernegiant Feb 06 '23

The worst content on this sub is someone stealing posts from other food subs because the person posting them here is ignorant and unthinking.

This is a Jewish deli sandwich. This is what it should look like. The only issue is that the based kind is made with Montreal smoked meat.

0

u/youngbloodoldsoul Feb 06 '23

Ya this is also pretty much what a Detroit corned beef sandwich looks like too. I don't want one all the time but sometimes you gotta feed the need.

2

u/frizzfest7 Feb 06 '23

That would feed me for 4 days.

2

u/druman22 Feb 07 '23

This looks good asf

2

u/Last-Instruction739 Feb 07 '23

What the fuck this is fantastic food

2

u/EnderAnswer Feb 07 '23

Watch your ducking mouth

2

u/bereved Feb 10 '23

Shut the fuck your mouth I would commit murder to eat this

7

u/peleg1989 Feb 06 '23

I'm with you OP. Food can be stupid and delicious at the same time.

What makes this stupid for me is that it completely pointless to stack it that high,

you can use these ingredients to make 2 perfect sandwiches.

7

u/CommandOfMyself Feb 06 '23

Nothing stupid about this and you should feel bad about posting it.

3

u/DavidCavalleri Feb 06 '23

This is not stupid, this is delicious.

5

u/ImperiumInfernalis Feb 06 '23

Wtf? Only thing stupid is op.

2

u/GamePro201X Feb 06 '23

This isn’t stupid though! This is the norm at many Jewish delis here in the states

I love these huge sandwiches lol

2

u/rossbcobb Feb 06 '23

Man, I'm gonna get downvoted but I'm gonna say it anyway. Just because this is a normal New York sandwich doesn't mean it's not stupid.

1

u/chootybeeks Feb 06 '23

I don’t think people understand what r/stupidfood is

1

u/who717 Feb 07 '23

If I hadn’t tried this before I would agree with OP… That being said, I ate this before and I miss it NYC got sandwiches and bagels down.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '23

Wrong sub.

There’s nothing “stupid” about a corned beef and pastrami sandwich. It’s very popular and tasty.

1

u/Thecryptsaresafe Feb 06 '23

The only very slight problem is that the cheese isn’t melty. I also prefer a thicker cut pastrami but I’m not picky at all

1

u/ZeroVoid_98 Feb 07 '23

I love how people defend this "sandwich". It's just a pile of meat poorly trying to hide between the thinnest bread ever. Just order a pile of meat and don't try to disguise it as a sandwich.

0

u/xHTown80x Feb 06 '23

This is a normal deli sandwich. Is OP not American?

6

u/kamika_c_1980 Feb 06 '23

if you mean me, no. i'm in germany :D

1

u/Maximum__Engineering Feb 06 '23

Omg. Eat fibre!!!

-7

u/Prairie_Crisis Feb 06 '23

Yeah this is gross and stupid. You don't need the entire animal in a dry ass sandwich. Downvote me too. Leave a comment as well, gluttons. So I can unfollow the replies lol

1

u/cernegiant Feb 06 '23

It's not dry, at all.

0

u/shankingviolet Feb 07 '23

This is a cultural food lol

-1

u/BipolarGod Feb 06 '23

NYers:. Chicago deep dish pizza is stupid. It's so big you can't fit it in your mouth. One slice is too much.
Also NYers:. Everyone look at our oversized sandwich you can't properly eat. It's great because everyone from NY says how great it is. Hey, fogetaboutit, I'm walking HEEERE, and such.

-11

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '23

[deleted]

8

u/_TrustMeImLying Feb 06 '23

It’s me. I’m the fatass. But I am in full control over my yearning to consume this delicious sammich mountain.

5

u/ImperiumInfernalis Feb 06 '23

I’m not remotely fat. And I have one several times a year.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 06 '23

Even if I have a fat ass, which I don't, there's NOTHING wrong with this sandwich. I see 2-3 meals coming out of this perfectly DELICIOUS sammich. u/krankie....maybe you should post somewhere else that you might be appreciated.

0

u/Tallywhacker73 Feb 07 '23

I'll go against the grain - I'm totally with you, OP. I love pastrami, and the kind they serve in the famous NYC delis, Canter's in LA, etc., is truly out of this world. Heaven on a plate.

But this is stupid food. It's just a weird gimmick, and who cares that it's a weird gimmick that's been around for a long time. You can get perfect bites from this, yes, but they should all be perfect. And they won't be with that sandwich. There's enough bread there for maybe 5 good bites.

Yes, you take the leftovers home and make extra sandwiches out of it - that makes it a stupid gimmick! Why not just give me 2-3 sandwiches in the first place then? Or why not just give me one regular sandwich - with normal/perfect proportions of bread/meat/cheese/sauce - and a half pound of extra pastrami to take home?

Gimmick.

0

u/djbow Feb 07 '23

Another reason why Americans lead the charge in being morbidly obese.

-11

u/APerson2021 Feb 06 '23

Jesus Christ. I'd rather guide my dad into my mum than eat that.

5

u/youngbloodoldsoul Feb 06 '23

I'd rather eat that than ever read that again.

9

u/iBeenie Feb 06 '23

What an unfortunately unforgettable sentence

3

u/cernegiant Feb 06 '23

That says a lot more about you than about the sandwich.

-3

u/APerson2021 Feb 06 '23

Christ calm down people. It's copy pasta.

1

u/Antoine1991 Feb 06 '23

ungrateful

1

u/Dpontiff6671 Feb 06 '23

Man why can’t you just make it 2 or 3 regular sandwiches

1

u/topshottatayy Feb 06 '23

Ain’t nothing stupid about this. Makes me sad I don’t eat meat anymore.

1

u/Unique_Disk3904 Feb 06 '23

thought it was cake

1

u/cRaZyDaVe23 Feb 06 '23

Yeah that's awful. Where is this so I know not to go in?

1

u/Captainirishy Feb 07 '23

Way too much meat for one person

1

u/gahidus Feb 07 '23

What the fuck is wrong with you? This is a magnificent sandwich. No wonder your cross posting from food porn. There's no stupidity here.

1

u/Fillmore_420 Feb 07 '23

Awesome food, not stupid food😑

1

u/FMLitsAJ Feb 07 '23

This is not stupid food.

1

u/stootchmaster2 Feb 07 '23

At what point does it stop being a sandwich?

You can't really pick it up and bite it, which would seem to be a defining part of being a sandwich. But if it's not a sandwich, what is it?

I must ponder.

1

u/RatsRNice Feb 07 '23

Not stupid food just because you think the sandwich is a little loaded. Takes away from what this subreddit is about.

1

u/tinydotbiguniverse Feb 07 '23

Stupid? Or amazing!?

1

u/atomictest Feb 07 '23

What’s your problem? Looks fucking delicious.

1

u/Rahbin_Banx Feb 07 '23

At this point the bread is just a formality.

1

u/Dinky_Nuts Feb 08 '23

Don’t tell this guy about East coast delis
