Ubuntu in the wild SCaLE 20X Retrospective
Heads-up for folks who may be using Ventoy to boot an installation
I attempted to install the 23.04 beta on my laptop and I used Ventoy to create the bootable thumb drive. I kept getting crash notifications, so I submitted one of the bug reports. I was informed by one of the devs that currently, attempting to install using Ventoy as a boot method is buggy and will not work.
Just an FYI! This may already be common knowledge, but sometimes I can be uncommonly dense. :)
Writing the ISO directly to the thumb drive worked perfectly.

KDE Connect over Layer 3 TCP/IP?
I am trying to set up KDE Connect through Wireguard, will it work? So far it doesn't seem to. Maybe it can only work with layer2 type connections?

Security on ubuntu
Hello !
I recently installed Ubuntu on my laptop and I was planning to use it for day-to-day work tasks: coding, writing, some data handling but also I was gonna have software such as Discord on it so I can play video games with my friends.
Obviously, because I'm new to all this and don't have an in-depth understanding of the situation myself, I'm not entirely sure what steps I need to take to make sure everything is secure. With windows, I just kind of turn the thing on and the firewall is up and that's usually enough combined with common sense.
Is Ubuntu the same? Do I have to take extra steps? The guide on the Ubuntu website leaves a lot to the choice of the user and I wanna make sure I do stuff properly.
Thanks in advance!

Has anyone had success running Scientific Word and/or Scientific Workplace in Ubuntu?
I am considering switching over to Ubuntu. However, imo, Mackichan’s Scientific Workplace and Word are the best WYSIWYG LaTeX software that exist. Has anyone personally been able to find a way to run any version of it on Ubuntu? If so would you kindly share your method?

Linux utilities for comparing files...
I bought a new, larger hard drive for my home NAS/Media Server and migrated about 4TB of files over to it. Now, I would like to compare the directories between those on the old hard drive and those on the new one to ensure that everything copied properly. These are mainly large video files and MP3 files.
I've tried diff and Meld and neither seem to work all that well with multi-gigabyte video files. Is there a preferred utility for doing this kind of thing? Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Blender 3.4-3.5 running up to 2x slower on Ubuntu 22.04 then on Windows 10
Hi guys,
I am not sure if this is the right place to post this question, so if it is not, can someone please point where to I should post it?
_____
Anyhow, I have purchased a lenovo legion pro with this specs: Intel i7 12700, nVidia 3070, RAM 16gb
I have Ubuntu 22.04 and Windows 10 dual boot.
In Windows, Blender works great, BMW demo scene, on GPU rendering takes for about 11 seconds. In Ubuntu, the same BMW scene renders in 20-22 seconds. The same goes for other demo scenes too. Classroom in Ubuntu renders in 48 seconds, Windows 29 seconds. Barbershop - Ubuntu - 3:21 min, Win - 2:00 min.
Ubuntu has installed fresh proprietary drivers 525 for nVidia card.
I was wondering if any of you knows how to make Blender run faster on Ubuntu then on Windows? As I know, Blender is supposed to run better on Linux then on any other OS, but maybe I am making a mistake.
Thank you.
Regards, BoooKaaa

can't install ubuntu on my notebook
i am a complete beginner and just cant install ubuntu on this machine. tried adding nomodeset on the command line / launching on safe graphics but it just doesnt help. what can i do?
Is Ubuntu paywalling security updates now? The Pop OS community has been kind to respond but I'm still confused how this isn't paywalling. I'm hoping the Ubuntu community can help me understand. Thanks! :)

how can I recover the data on my 2nd HD with zfs after reinstalling Ubuntu on my 1st HD with ext4?
I had trouble to upgrade from 20.04 to 22.04 and decided to make a clean install on my first HD using ext4. But after successful installation I realized that I could no longer access the data on my 2nd HD that is using ZFS. I unfortunately forgot that it's using zfs - so stupid from me. My 3rd HD is using ext4 and I have no trouble accessing the data. How can I recover the data from zfs formatted 2nd HD?

A few questions about snaps updates
I am using Ubuntu 22.04.2. I still need to close the app before updating. Does it have to be done from the terminal? Is there a way to trace this somewhere as a bug?
I heard somewhere that they are trying to fix this on 23.04, just like their long launch. Is it really true?

Get rid of notification "Some required theme snaps are missing. Would you like to the install them now?"
Any ideas on how I could fix this annoying pop up?
"Some required theme snaps are missing.
Would you like to install them now?
Yes/ No/ default"
Just started appearing on log in recently. Pressing any 3 of those options seemingly does nothing.
I'm on Ubuntu 22.04 with XFCE and I generally avoid snaps, Firefox and Dolphin emulator being the only ones on the system. My instinct is that it's most likely something Firefox update related or to do with my GTK themes maybe?..could be wrong. My theme is Mint-Y-Dark-Teal [gtk2/3].
It doesn't seem to be having any negative impact on anything, just the non-functional pop up is super irritating.
Big thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this..

creating a iso file fails permanently - something worng with the commands
accoding to this manual i want to create a iso-file on stick
see https://discovery.endeavouros.com/installation/create-install-media-usb-key/2021/03/
btw: my iso is this - a endeavouros :
The dd command will almost always result in a working Live USB. Just change the paths to the correct paths for your system.
NOTE: The USB drive is specified as /dev/sdx and not /dev/sdxX. The most common path of a USB drive is /dev/sdb BUT yours might be different depending on your system.
To view a list of all drives currently attached to your system run this command:
sudo fdisk -l Another command to show information about the drives:
lsblk -f Note: the USB drive may not be mounted when writing an ISO to it! So make sure you umount it first:
sudo umount /dev/sdX
and accordingly

Shutdown/Reboot/Logout prompts
As the newer versions of Ubuntu roll out, I've noticed that the prompts for shut down, logout, restart, etc. Look the same. Will these be updated in the near or distant future to reflect the new changes of the GNOME desktop environment?

My HDD not showing up in Ubuntu(22.10)
Edit: Sorry I didn't read the rules, here's my askubuntu link.
Hi I'm very new to Ubuntu, and I tried searching for this problem but couldn't find any suitable solution.
I have two disks in my machine. I wiped windows and installed Ubuntu. I didn't do anything extra while installing just followed the reccomended installation procedure. I chose "Erase disk and install Ubuntu" and didn't set up encryption.
I can't seem to access the other disk.
- it doesn't show in Disk Usage Analyzer
- it doesn't show in the ubuntu command line
- I tried
sudo fdisk -l
and it shows this:
- I tried
Thanks in advance for helping :)

Ubuntu installation stuck at "Updates and other softwares"
I tried installing Kubuntu 22.10 and the installation got stuck at the "Updates and other softwares" step, I had to give up after waiting for two hours, same thing happened with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, Kubuntu 22.04 LTS, Ubuntu 20.04. I looked up for solutions online and some of them suggested that i should unmount my windows partition (speaking of that, i am trying to install in dual boot btw, i already have an windows 11 partition) , but there was no option to unmount the partition , neither in gparted , nor in kde partition manager.
So help me out if possible, and I am kinda noob so easy-to-understand instructions would be really helpful. Thank you all in advanced.
