Help Simple questions and Help thread - Week of March 26, 2023

Welcome to the weekly Simple questions and Help thread, for questions that don't need their own posts!

Before making a comment, we recommend you search your problem on Bing and check if your question is already answered on our Windows Frequently Asked Questions wiki page. To get help with your PC, you can also make a post next Monday using the "Tech Support" flair or use r/TechSupport and r/WindowsHelp.

Some examples of questions to ask:

  • Is this super cheap Windows key legitimate? (probably not)

  • How can I install Windows 11?

  • Can you recommend a program to play music?

  • How do I get back to the old Sound Control Panel?

Sorting by New is recommend and is the default.

Be sure to check out the Windows 11 version 22H2 Launch Megathread and also the Windows 11 FAQ posts, they likely have the answers to your Windows 11 questions already!

Feature Search Highlights – New graphic/icon in your search bar

Microsoft recently introduced a new feature on Windows 10 and 11 called Search Highlights. The Search Highlights show things like trending searches and other events going on such as holidays and sporting events. If you have the search bar enabled, it will now have an icon at the end. This feature is slowly being rolled out, so not everyone will get it at the same time.

If you do not want this new feature, it is easy for you to disable.

• On Windows 11, open the Settings App. From there select Privacy & Security, then Search Permissions. Under the More Settings section will be a toggle for Show Search Highlights, simply toggle that off.

• On Windows 10, right click or long press on your search bar, then pick Search, then uncheck Show Search Highlights. Done!

More advanced users can also use the Registry to disable it.

  • The key is located at HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionSearchSettings and you should see IsDynamicSearchBoxEnabled. If not, right click or long press in here and create a new 32 bit DWORD value and name it IsDynamicSearchBoxEnabled and for the value we will set it to 0 to disable, or 1 to enable.

  • You can run this from the Command Prompt as administrator to disable the feature:

reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionSearchSettings" /v "IsDynamicSearchBoxEnabled" /d 0 /t REG_DWORD /f

If you change the /d 0 to /d 1 it will re-enable it.

Here is what the search menu looks like once disabled: https://i.imgur.com/wILIk9G.png

IT administrators can control this using policy here

Bug some application icons on my taskbar have disappeared but the application shortcuts are still there. This started happening on Windows 10 but Got slightly worse on Windows 11.

Upvotes

There or more icons on this taskbar than there appears. the missing icons on notepad, paint, the new outlook beta, Microsoft store, minecraft launcher, And the original mail application before I switched over to the new outlook beta. also shown in the screenshot is a weird Microsoft Bing thing pinned to the taskbar that also is missing its icon. Like How??? they'll show their icon everywhere else including Their window sometimes and the start menu!

App Looking for Local Software with Same Functionality as Google Photos

Hi everyone,

I am looking for a local software that has the same functionalities as Google Photos, including the ability to view a timeline of my photos. I am specifically looking for a Windows app that can group people, create memories, create slides and videos, and allow me to view my images in a timeline format.

What I mean by timeline is that I want to be able to use a slider to move back and forth in time and have the software display all the images I have of people from that time period. I would also like to be able to view other albums (created by the software) about that time, such as visits to a particular city or event.

This feature would be extremely helpful in organizing my photos and videos, and would allow me to easily find and view images from specific moments in time. In addition, I am hoping to find a software that can help me manage and organize my media files without relying on cloud-based services. I want to have full control over my files and not worry about privacy issues or potential data breaches.

If you have any recommendations for software that can offer these features, please let me know. I would appreciate any suggestions or advice on this matter. Thank you in advance!

Feature Why can't you kill explorer anymore?

Whenever you go to the Task manager and select Windows Explorer, the ribbon changes from this:

https://preview.redd.it/amdglr8wk4ra1.png?width=1057&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=edf9f8eef33cf0ee9081a4b777120cb20c0e2f02

To this:

Seems like you can't "end" the task anymore.

This is a fairly recent change, maybe a year ago or so. It definitely wasn't introduced with Windows 11. It changes nothing. I remember that if you end Windows Explorer, it automatically restarts.

I wonder what the reason for the change is. I'm not against having a restart option, but it would be better for us to have both options for EVERY running process - both end and restart.

General Question Is there any way to have folders appear first in a search?

Say I am in Pictures and I want to type a search in for my "Puppy" folder, I type it in, and I get the pictures that are IN the puppy folder, but I don't get the "Puppy" folder itself to display, which makes it so I have to navigate through all my folders to get to the "Puppy" folder instead of just being able to search for it. I USED to be able to do this, but Windows 11 changed something and now it only displays the pictures IN the folder I'm searching for, and not the folder itself.

I'd also like to have the folders within the "Puppy" folder to appear on the top of the search without compromising the "Date added" view.

Solved Windows 10 realtek audio will not recognize switch between headphones and speakers. [solved]

To preserve the answer, sharing the information on Reddit from Microsoft answers.

Source: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/realtek-audio-driver-doesnt-dynamically-switch/ec5997da-aa64-4f1d-b695-9236f50979ef

These were my exact issues as described in the forum-

Sound plays through the PC speaker, if you plug in headphones the sound continues to play through the PC speaker
If you restart the computer with headphones plugged in, the sound plays through the headphones. When you unplug the headphones, sounds play through the PC speaker. When you plug the headphones in, the sound continues to play through the PC speaker
If you plug in the headphones early during the logon process, sound will play through the headphones. If you unplug the headphones after the logon process is complete, the sound will play through the PC speakers. When you next plug in the headphones, the sound continues to play through the PC Speakers.

Root Cause

The Realtek audio driver installs a service called 'Realtek Audio Universal Service' 'RtkAudUService64.exe' that is instructed to start up in three contexts.

The Service starts up as automatic in the system context and spawns two processes

"C:WINDOWSSystem32RtkAudUService64.exe"

"C:WINDOWSSystem32RtkAudUService64.exe" –admin

And the following registry entry starts it in the user context

KeyName

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun

Value RtkAudUService

Data

"C:WINDOWSSystem32RtkAudUService64.exe" –background

The Service in the User context seems to break the dynamic switching or recognition of the engagement of the headphone jack.

Solution

  1. Kill the Process (Standard User)

Open the Task manger by right clicking on the task bar and selecting the 'Task Manager' from the context menu. Click on the 'Details' Tab Sort the processes by Name if necessary. Scroll down to the 'RtkAudUService.exe' entries. Select the 'RtkAudUService.exe' entry that has your username represented in the 'User Name' column. Either Right Click the process then select ‘End task’ from the context menu, or Click on the 'End Task' button at the bottom right of the 'Task Manager' window.

  2. Disable User Context Service Startup (Administrator)

Open the Task manger by right clicking on the task bar and selecting the 'Task Manager' from the context menu. Select the Startup Tab

Select the 'Realtek HD Audio Universal Service' and either Right Click and select 'Disable' option from the context menu or click on the 'Disable' Button at the bottom right of the Task Manager window.

  1. Disable the Service and Delete the Registry Key (Administrator)

Open 'Computer Management' by Right Clicking the Windows Start menu and selecting the 'Computer Management' option from the context menu. Navigate to 'Services' and select the 'Realtek Audio Universal Service'

Either Double Click or Right Click the service and select Properties from the context menu In the Properties Dialogue box change the ‘Startup Type’ to ‘Disabled’ and Stop the Service. Click ‘OK’

Open the Registry Editor by pressing the Windows Start Menu and typing 'Regedit' then selecting the resulting option. Navigate to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun' and select the 'Run' Key Right Click the 'RtkAudUService' entry in the results pane and select 'Delete' Reboot the Computer

This solution works for windows 10 22h2 also. my motherboard is Asus PRIME B660M-A WIFI D4.

Meta Why have a "Tech Support" Flair at all?

Whenever you want to post on this sub, you always see:

THIS IS NOT A TECH SUPPORT SUBREDDIT. If something is not working right, use r/WindowsHelp or r/TechSupport instead. This includes error messages, blue screens of death and software failing to install.

Yet, when I go to select my flair, there's an option for Tech Support. WHY?!!

General Question Why is windows 10/11 start bar such absolute garbage

Sometimes it takes forever to load the search box, half the time I cannot even type anything into the search box or in the explorer search box, but the keyboard works just fine in text editors. And even more often, I cannot get the start bar to disappear behind youtube videos. And this happens on dozens of computers I've used. This is absolutely insane, Microsoft is trying to reinvent artificial intelligence, hiring and firing 10's of thousands of employees, but they can't fix their own operating system's most basic functionality for like 3 years. What a joke of a company

General Question Possible to use mouse gestures?

Does anyone know of an external mouse or a another way that is capable of using swipe gestures similar to the Apple Magic Mouse? I use numerous virtual desktops on my Windows 10 laptop and I would be able to multitask so much better if I could use a mouse gesture to swipe between them. I bought a Arc mouse with the touch pad thinking it would work but it doesn’t. Even if I could get the Arc to use the 3 finger click to scroll back and forth between desktops that would suffice but it only lets you scroll to next or previous desktop so it’s one directional which does not help.

General Question Best "speech-to-text" software/solution...?

Hi

In 2023 which one is (are) the best solutions to convert english speech to english text... Either from "live" recording or via saved audio file. Online solutions are ok too, but i would probably prefer some "offline" solutions (in order to have "safety" that my speech/text is not going anywhere - cannot be seen by someone else - privacy). But website/online solutions are ok too i guess, just would prefer the offline more.

Which ones are the BEST (most accurate etc.) in 2023...?

(and if there is even some free option that is super/quite good) thrown that in too :-) ).

Thank you

Solved Is it possible to use a separate MS account while being logged in in Windows11 with another MS account?

So far I refused to log in with my MS account in Windows. Now I would like to try it out but I do use 2 MS accounts, one for games (secondary account), one for general use (mail and stuff, primary account). Lets say I login with my primary account, is it possible to use the gaming app with my gaming account? I dont really want to use my more "professional" account for games, so I would like to keep them separated.

Feature Deactivate 1 specific F key?

Is it possible to turn off one specific F key? Specifically, I would like to make it so that pressing F1 does nothing. It's located right next to the Esc key which is used a lot in the design software I use. The problem is that on my laptop, F1 makes the computer sleep instantly. It's very annoying when I am going to hit Esc and accidentally hit F1 instead.

Thanks!

Discussion Windows 11 upgrade assistance

Steam has finally pulled the plug on Windows 7 (and 8 but who cares). I have been using Windows 7 on my PC because it runs much better on my hardware and is generally superior to 10/11 in my opinion, but now is the time to upgrade! I need some assistance making this a smooth transition. #1 concern: Bloat, how can I get rid of all the bloat and other unneeded crap in Windows 11? #2: TPM bypass, all my PciE slots are taken. #3: Looks, Windows 11 is ugly, does Classic Shell still work? And my last concern, #4: Microsoft accounts, I am NOT signing up for Microsoft to use my computer.

Any help is appreciated, I'm also open to other ideas.
