I do wish the director could cut to the judges' faces more often. There are whole seconds going by when I don't know if they're looking puzzled or not.

u/docsnotright Feb 03 '23
Right and the dramatic audience reactions, who wants to see the magician perform anyway.
412
u/Magyman Feb 03 '23
The best part of those is that they're not even from the performance. They'll just record them from various episodes to edit in when they feel like
88
u/wolfgang784 Feb 03 '23
I wanna catch one where they are wearing the wrong glasses or something in the cut vs episode.
13
u/Jagermeister4 Feb 04 '23
And sometimes they reuse reactions. I've seen the exact same clip of Nicole Scherzinger smiling reaction used on like 4 different X Factor episodes. One use was egregious as they showed her smiling to a singers performance even though her judgment afterwards was that she did wanted the singer off the show

Every time I'm watching big moments in a football game or something crazy happens on the news, I always wish I could see Simon Cowell's face. I yearn to look deep into his eyes, to think his thoughts, to feel his feelings, to experience his experience. It kills me to know he's out there somewhere watching things unwatched. He doesn't deserve this, it's not fair, but don't worry Simon I'm always watching you watch things inside my own head, and I want you to know that and take comfort. No one can take this away from us Simon, no one can.

Yeah, that show is such hot garbage. We have to watch the hosts and commentators looking shocked and saying "it's all gone horribly wrong" when they've already seen it happen in rehearsal. So far from the original idea of actual reactions to an actual talent show.
→ More replies (1)32
u/CheekyMunky Feb 03 '23
Without their looks of totally genuine confusion and concern, I might have just thought the bumbling was an obviously facetious part of the act that everyone was entertained by.
But thanks to those reaction shots, I can see that he clearly had everyone in the room utterly fooled, and they all thought he was really bombing it!
15
u/madhattr999 Feb 03 '23
It's like the show is made for idiots. One giant commercial. Such great talent is wasted by it.
11
u/madhattr999 Feb 03 '23
It just convinces me to never watch this show, despite the amazing talent they get for it.

It's like the most slapstick, on the nose impression of a nervous guy. It's totally obvious it was all a shtick.
Silent movie era actor level animatimated movement and all. This is all so heavily manufactured. Every part including the audience. The only sucker here is you for thinking otherwise.

It’s obvious the fumbling and breaking table was all part of the act. When the idiot said “it’s all going wrong isn’t it?” I felt insulted.

One would expect that a comedic act is, in fact, manufactured.

If you think he suckered the judges, then the judges and producers successfully suckered you. He wasn't even trying to fool anyone into thinking he was actually screwing up the trick.

The assistant is hidden curled up in the box as he's flinging around the mannequin. As he's placing the mannequin into the box, she moves her head and limbs into place at the right moments, and the mannequin goes into the excess space where she was hiding. Open the box and voila, this mannequin that was falling apart is now a woman.
103
u/pannoboy Feb 03 '23
If the assistant wouldve wore gloves like the mannequin, it wouldve been better in my personnal opinion
66
u/Omegamanthethird Feb 03 '23
That honestly feels like it should be the absolute bare minimum for the "act". They don't even attempt to make it seem like the assistant is the same as the mannequin.
→ More replies (1)29
u/pannoboy Feb 03 '23
Thats a fair point, i gotta agree with you. Thing is, they shouldve pulled something nobody would expect caus from the moment he was playing with the mannequin, i could guess what was gonna happen.

u/Suspicious-Elk-3631 Feb 03 '23
Right. The box is larger and wider than the audience realizes.
28
u/Chucknastical Feb 03 '23
Also that extra support beam that spans the length of the table just below the tabletop camouflages how thick the table actually is. The compartment extends passed the box into the table.
You still need a very fit contortionist to pull the trick off but the more petite and skilled the contortionist, the smaller the prop box can get.
21
u/jajohnja Feb 03 '23
Yup - the assistants are the true heroes of these tricks!
The "magician" is there basically just to create misdirection. And take credit.
→ More replies (1)12
u/damn_jexy Feb 03 '23
The lid is intentionally made smaller than the box so when the lid open it gave the illusion that the box is smaller than it actually is , but yes she got to be great contortionist

So honestly asking as someone who never watched these shows. The judges are in on the acts ahead of time right? Because there's no way you'd think this wasn't slapstick. And the timing is just too good for it to not be staged. Like if she really thought he was fucking up she would of voted no while he was botching the act for a minute straight.
29
u/billwoo Feb 03 '23
Even if they aren't in on it, they are professional entertainers always looking to play their part in the entertainment.

If you believe that this guy was actually having problems with his routine you're either 9, 90 or just plain dumb. This is some charlie chaplin (but obviously not as good) level of slapstick.
7
u/SabashChandraBose Feb 03 '23
Oh that's what I should have been watching? The magic show was getting in the way of observing the judges' reactions. I thought that was the main show.
41
u/Unclematttt Feb 03 '23 edited Feb 03 '23
I can't believe MFers on this sub keep upvoting actual magic (well, an illusion). Read the damn subreddit description:
Anything that clearly has no other explanation but no good voodoo black magic fuckery.
I have an explanation: magician has a skinny-ass lady inside of the extra thick table.

This is a reality show. We have no idea what she was actually reacting to or when. Reality shows edit together reaction shots that have nothing to do with what's going on all the time.
