The Souls games. Including Elden Ring. Good games? Yes. Do I like them? No. Every person has a different cuppa tea and mine happens to be not those.
I will point out that watching other people play them is kinda fun.

u/TheBrownEvilPig Feb 06 '23
As a massive fan of the Souls series, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your comment. Almost all posts I've seen about people not liking the Souls series are filled with misinformation and whatever justification they can find for calling the games bad. You can absolutely just find that a game or series is just something your not into, while still saying that it is an objectively well made game.
For me, Until Dawn and it's ilk are like that. Those games just aren't for me, but I can appreciate the work and effort that went into those games and say that for the people that like that game genre, they are good games for the most part.

u/Buzzdope Feb 07 '23
I really love the atmosphere and story in all souls games but I dont have the time and patience to grind bosses, i have tried countless time to play them but it-s so frustating for me that there isnt a lower difficulty for the story enjoyers like me.

I always see people justify it by saying Souls games are made for sweats who have no life and take the games too seriously, when honestly, while that crowd definitely is somewhere in the player base, that’s not true at all. I enjoy the Souls games because I don’t take dying seriously. I don’t care if I die I’m just exploring and having a good time. And sure, having some skill is helpful because the bosses will fuck you, but at the same time, a lot of the hardest bosses in many of the games are optional, and summoning is an option.
For that reason I feel like a lot of people who are busy, don’t play much or whatever still love the Souls series because when we hop on and play, we get to experience something new and exciting each time. They’re also a bit relaxing in a sense to me, although again, this is only if you’re not the type to get upset every time you die.
6
u/scipio0421 Feb 07 '23
I'm the same way. I like watching others play soulslike games (Ellen's Souls Academy on OutsideXtra is great) but I just get frustrated too easily at dying in the same place forty million times to enjoy the games myself.

u/Hampamatta Feb 07 '23
I wosh i could enjoy them, but i dont handle frustration well. Which is also why I dont play multiplayer anymore.

Escape From Tarkov. I shoot guns in real life and when I realized I would be much more confident in my ability to hit what I’m aiming at in real life, I lost all interest. The shooting in that game feels like the main antagonist.

I'll go a step further and say any shooter with mmo-like abilities. Valorant, overwatch, Apex, rogue company.
I don't want to have to manage 6 cool downs, 3 item slots and do my w-2s while also being shot at.
21
u/Sweezenator Feb 07 '23
I get your point, but I wouldn’t say Val, OW, or Apex are have MMO abilities. Abilities/cooldowns yes but pretty different from MMO.

u/WukongPvM Feb 07 '23
I agree calling these games which have 2 abilities per character maybe 3 if they are complex a MMO like abilities is a odd take.
They are just hero shooters

Pokemon scarlet and violet. I just can't get passed the feeling that the game was rushed. Don't get me wrong I love pokemon, but after seeing what breath of the wild was capable of on the switch as far as rendering and graphics, it just makes it hard to appreciate the game as a whole. The pokemon aspect is nice, but come on..... distant windmill turning at 2 fps!... idk it's just not for me.
29
u/Gytlap24 Feb 06 '23
More salt to the wound when legenda arceus came out earlier and at the same time is probably the best pokemon game on the switch
6
u/alksreddit Feb 06 '23
I tried for the longest time to like it. The "do the gyms in any order" thing sounded so exciting but it was horribly executed. It's the first Pokémon game I've sold in years (and surprisingly I got a LOT of money for it, had never seen GameStop give 40 for a game ever lol)

Performance issues aside, it was too little too late for the franchise. Sure we got an open world, but there’s very little in it.

Kingdom Hearts. I've only played the first, and a lot of people say that the second is much better, but so far I'm just not feeling it. I didn't care for the Gummi ship parts and I wasn't a fan of the beat-em-up+menu diving combat.
26
u/40AndAwesome Feb 06 '23
First was great…second good. Then they made a million games, many of them system exclusive ,that you HAD to play to understand the story arc..that destroyed the series for me. Even if you try to just Wikipedia the story, I was so lost in 3 I just gave up

u/KernelSanders1986 Feb 07 '23
Exact same here. I personally love 1 the most due to nostalgia, but 2 is still really good. But sadly I didn't own a psp, so I missed out on one of the most lore relevant games untill a lot later in life, and had no idea what was going in in KH3. KH3 itself was okay, but still love the older games better. And there were games I didn't even knew existed untill alot later as well.
I think when KH became a DMC aerial combo game it kinda went downhill, I like the more grounded combat of the earlier games.
3
u/40AndAwesome Feb 07 '23
Wow…good call on it turning into a Disney DMC. Never even dawned on me till you said it
2
u/Ricky_Rollin Feb 07 '23
It’s a damn shame what they did to this series. By the time the second one came out, I was already not feeling it and I played the living shit out of the first one. In fact, it’s one of the very few RPG‘s that I played from beginning to end without stopping for an extended period. I beat the game and kept trying to do the side stuff as well. I got busy by the time the second one came out but it was extremely annoying when I try to get back into it to see that there was like 15 different games. I hate house Squenix does this and I’m really hoping they don’t fuck up the final fantasy seven remake’s.

Civilization VI. Not that I don't understand its success, I think it's great that people enjoy it, but Civilization is my all-time favorite series and was hit hard by this last one being so randomly changed with simplistic mini-gamey mechanics and that "cute" visual style.
I tried hard to get used to it, played around 200 hours even buying its two major expansions, but nothing. Even if it's a really entertaining game, I just felt it was a straight bad Civilization, and the nonsensical, dumb AI didn't help either.
After all my life playing this franchise (started with Civ II) I felt some sort of inner pain with Civ VI, like if I can hardly recognise Civilization in it at all. I know it was made this way to welcome newbies, and to release on mobile phones, tablets and Switch... but still, coming from all the great games before it was a total bummer for me.
3
u/lazy_carrot246 Feb 07 '23
Yes to all. I played civ5 vox populi, were I really had the feeling that I play against a thinking opponent. After that I just could not play against the braindead AI of civ6. I thought if some amateur programmers were able to create such a good AI in their freetime, then then developers of civ6 must either be incompetent or they just give 0 fucks because the people buy it anyway.

u/dmarty77 Feb 06 '23
The amount of stuff to do and the amount of things to find. I’m a bit OCD when it comes to collections in games. I tend to prefer more straightforward gamey games that don’t require me to pull out a notepad to keep track of everything.
I’ll 100% admit, it’s a me problem.

u/MilkManofCasba Feb 06 '23
Ah okay. I actually have OCD but for some reason it never translated into my video gaming. Just lost of strange organizational patterns, checking things too often, and counting things even when knowing the number will not help me.
I actually prefer open world games with lots to do, but I usually don’t make it my mission to do any of the side activities. So for breath of the Wild I never made it a goal to seek out the shrines and korok seeds, just while I was doing a quest if I found one I would do it.
But perfectly understandable, I have no idea why they decided 700 Korok seeds was a good number.

Breath of the Wild is an ocean full of space that is knee deep and full of super Mario maker-like shrines. The world is pretty boring. People had to begin making their own fun.

Agreed, and the wide spread accolades definitely confused me as well. It just seemed like a subpar open world and a very bland Zelda experience, but I’ve seen basically no criticism from any major outlet.
Also the fan base is merciless if you find any valid flaw (which there are many)
4
u/Pleasant_Willingness Feb 07 '23
I always describe BOTW as a good game, but a terrible LOZ game. All the things I go to Zelda for got deprioritized in favor of the open world, which while very impressive especially on the switch, wasn’t the adventure I wanted to take with link

u/Iriscience Feb 07 '23
Well, I bought my switch and botw since the first day. After three differents attempts to finish the game and most of the secondary missions and sanctuary’s, yesterday was my final day on this game. Is so hard to explain: is such an a amazing game, but after this 5-6 years I can never be hooked by botw. The main reason, probably, is the lack of dedicated time to the game, you need to play so many hours to explore the map and do the missions.
So, with this reply, I can only say: keep trying. Is a amazing experience and the final hours of the game (with the mementos and the Hyrule Castle) is probably the top tier moments in my memories playing a game.

For anti-story gamers, its a unplayable. Skip spamming cutscenes is still too much time. Pressing X should instantly take me to the next playable checkpoint, but its doesn't just triggers the next conversation.
I don't remember any parts of Skyrim with anywhere close to the "downtime" as the Witcher.

13
u/haydenfred99 Feb 07 '23
I am a massive fan of the Red Dead series. With that being said, Rockstar really does need to find a way to diversify their gameplay. Every mission is go here, shoot these people. The writing, the story, the world, the art direction, graphics, sound design is top tier quality. But yeah, the gameplay does start to get very repetitive and Red Dead Redemption is by no means a short game.

I'm playing the game for the first time now, I'm right at the beginning of Chapter 5. I love it so far, but the missions are definitely my favorite parts. The game world is huge, and random events are great, but I feel like the only side content consists of hunting, collectibles, and 3 minigames, which is a shame.
GTA 5 has so much side content available, and while the setting certainly helps with that some, it's hard for me to not rush missions in RDR2. I wish the game had a bit more that you can do, and that it had a moment where it basically tells you to relax and explore a bit. Up until now, it feels like exploring is such an abrupt pause to the story, so it doesn't make much sense that Arthur would do that. I've also been spoiled for a few ending bits, so I want to do a lot of side content before I get too far in, but there hasn't been a good story break to do that unfortunately.

u/haydenfred99 Feb 07 '23
I get where you’re coming from. The gang just needs one more big score and they’re always trying to set up for it. I remember on my first play through I’d go back to the camp almost every night and play cards until the sun came back up. That initial play through is so nostalgic for me.

The gameplay is bland. I just want to dead eye murder people, rob banks, and make my character stronger. But it plays this linear story under the guise of an open world.
Too much "Press X" for things that never occur again.
Worst part and I will defend it forever: The game is full of itself by forcing you to boringly ride a damn horse across the map. Its the game dev version of smelling your own farts.
50% of the entire game is traveling back to camp.
25% of the game is riding to missions with the other camp members.

It's amazing. I discovered it in 2013 and haven't played Skyrim without it since. It de-levels the world (among a million other things) and turns it into a very punishing (and more realistic) but rewarding experience.
I highly recommend checking out Wabbajack, which is a tool that can install hundreds of mods, with all their settings ready to go and their sequence already set up, with a few clicks.
The most recent modlist I've been playing with is called Wildlander (based around Requiem), and it's fantastic and very easy to set up and use. It installs its own launcher, so you don't even need to deal with Mod Organizer or Nexus Mod Manager.

Elden ring, man the soul game formula became old on me, i just didn't like the stories of the npcs, finding them was hide and seek, they just give2 lines of dialogue then going to another area, and each one of them has to end in a terrible way because fuck them that why.
Kinda wish they had powerful presence and noticeable movements just like the npcs from bloodborne or darksouls 3.

Witcher 3. I’ve played the game and it’s dlc hella times before around 2015-2018 but I’ve kind of just fallen out of playing these types of games where there’s a million question marks on the map that leads to the same things. Side quests and main quests have some really good writing but everything in between is really repetitive and you kind of have to do it because there’s places of power hidden in the world so you can get bonuses to speech for axis or heal on hit for quen since XP is pretty paltry outside of quests. It’s still an amazing game, I kind of just hate that I’ve fallen out of love with playing games like these

RDR2. It's obviously very pretty, and so much is invested in its story, but I found the gameplay to be boring as all get-out, and to me, something that is in the wrong medium is kind of unforgivable. If you want to make a film, make a film, but for something to be successful as a video game it needs to have fun gameplay mechanics.
20
u/Scout_61 Feb 06 '23
While there are definitely fair criticisms of rdr2. I think it’s gameplay fits the game they were trying to make. It’s just not for everyone. However I would say for a lot of people such as myself. The gameplay mechanics are great, but I like a slower more realistic game.

8
Feb 06 '23
Well I wouldn’t say the gameplay mechanics are bad by any stretch. They’re not for you, sure, but RDR2 doesn’t play like a film for most of us. There’s so much extra content to do that has nothing to do with the main story, and it’s really just a world for you to do whatever you want in. Think about why people love Minecraft so much. Not every game has to be super fast-paced, intense and thrilling. RDR2 is for people who want to sit back and relax, while it also still has thrilling missions that will end in shoot-outs.
I will say the controls are clunky at times though.

u/Help_An_Irishman Feb 06 '23
It takes a good while to adjust, so I get your complaint. But I found that once I did, it was an experience unlike anything before it. It really feels like playing a movie or living out pieces of another life at times, and while I understand that that might not be what you're looking for, I have to give mad respect to the devs for creating such an innovative experience.
It's a slower experience outside of combat, but that's the point. It feels more real that way.

4
u/Tim_Allosaurus Feb 07 '23
I’m not OP, but I’ve tried a lot times to like hollow night. But at the start of the game it just feels very boring in the combat sector. Idk if it improves but only being able to slash and that’s it makes tough battles tedious and lacking. Then there is the whole fact that it’s a metrovania. It doesn’t seem to matter how much effort or interest or passion that genre offers I just can’t play them. I’ve tried Rainworld, Hollow Night, DeadCells, and MonsterSanctuary. All of them have aspects that I absolutely love but I can’t play them and have fun. I genuinely don’t know why. I love hollow nights setting, it’s development team, it’s history both in and out of game, but I don’t like the game.

u/rcanhestro Feb 07 '23
i can see why, HK initial combat is basic as stuff, only when you start getting more abilities it gets wilder with the combos and movement options, but early on it's very basic.
2
u/Carrthulhu Feb 07 '23
I reckon once you get through the first couple of hours / get your first couple of new abilities it starts to become addictive. Totally get what you're saying though. A bit of a reverse learning curve.
I played Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox and thought the game was absolute trash... That was until I beat the blimp level and its boss. The game starts to shine after that but you have to eat a piece of shit sandwich before you can reap the rewards.

That’s fair. I’m a halo fan but it’s definitely not for everyone. Plus with how Microsoft has been handling the IP I’m starting to hate it myself haha

Red Dead Redemption 2. Whatever enjoyment I would've gotten out of the story and characters was just ruined by the horrid pacing of the slow movement and every menial task taking 15 seconds of slow-mo animation to perform. And the same loose gunplay that has been in every Rockstar game since the GTA3 trilogy. And an open world with too much emptiness that makes you ride 45 minutes straight between missions; this game really would've been so much better if it was made linear.

u/taxanddeath Feb 07 '23
You want an empty open world, try out Forspoken. Makes RDR2 look full of life.

u/Dacheat1212 Feb 06 '23
Emptiness? Of course, to each their own, but this world was FILLED with random events, side missions, POIs. But again, perception is reality so i appreciate your honesty toward a game thats considered to be objectively great

I’m playing for the first time and something is always happening out of nowhere lol. I love it.

Same, I was so excited when I got the game after seeing the clips of streamers sobbing at the endings (even though I never knew what was happening) and I immediately got 4 hours into the game and basically nothing happened. Killed some wolves in the snow, and blew up a train. I love the type of game that rdr2 is but it’s too slow for me. I’m playing mafia definitive edition rn and it’s way faster.

I think about it honestly similarly to how I think about animal crossing sometimes, just a comfy leisure game for when you feel like taking your time.

Elden Ring.
And before I'm told to git gud, dying over and over ain't my idea of a good time.

fair enough.
not everyone enjoys the "dying grind".
gaming is for everyone, but doesn't mean that each individual game should be for everyone.

I'll probably get Downvoted to hell for this but: Ghost of Tsushima. I definitely agree the studio did a fantastic job with it, but at the end of the day it really strikes me as just Farcry: Japan.
I'm still playing through it (partway through Act 2), but so far it just not that fun. The story feels bland to me. Jin feels very stilted. The supporting characters range from people who come across as fairly unlikable jerks (Ishikawa), or just bland (Yuna). Haven't started Norio's story so hopefully that helps.
Also the traveling from point to point seems really tedious to me where every 30 seconds I have to get off my horse because of a patrol or small PoI.
Maybe someone can give me some encouragement that the story improves in this Act but right now it feels like a slog.
16
u/SingelHickan Feb 06 '23
If memory serves me right, the main story does get more interesting towards the end but for me, the selling point was just the combat. Imo one of the best melee sword combat systems in videogames.

Act 2 is pretty good, but honestly if you haven’t gotten into it by the end of act 1 it’s unlikely you will. Personally I love the game, easily my goty that year. But it’s also not for everyone. I like the stories, struggles, combat, art and music. But that’s me.

u/A1aRha Feb 06 '23
I'm sorry it's dragging for you, I was blown away by Ghost. It's in my top 5 ever, because the gameplay is just incredible. As a tip, play it on lethal, it is more immersive!
The story also improves with a pretty satisfying ending arc, please update me if you manage to finish it 😁
P.s. the multiplayer is actually fun if you have friends to play with3
u/OctaBit Feb 06 '23
I have heard the multiplayer is excellent, but I just got my PS5 and have been on a big single player kick. Still have a few more in my backlog I need to get to.
It's a shame because I want to like the game, but maybe I'm just burnt out on the open world design. I'll keep pressing on and see how it goes. I might skip going for the completionist run though.
2
u/A1aRha Feb 06 '23
Best of luck 😁 I also found Jins story quite compelling... what his culture demands of him vs what reality needs him to be, but if that's not interesting to you, perhaps you just aren't the target audience. Ah well, if you end up wanting to try multiplayer let me know 😊

Stardew Valley
I was never able to find anything that I really enjoyed doing or wanted to aim for there was the community center but I had no idea where to get anything, trying to upgrade my house and other tools felt like a slog none of the bachelor(ette)s attracted me and then there's fishing. I've said it before and I'll say again fishing in video games sucks and I'm tired of pretending it doesn't and this was the only way to make money in the early game.
It is impressive how one guy created a game and wish him the very best of luck with whatever he does in the future but stardew valley isn't a favourite of mine.

Witcher 3.
I can see why people enjoy it, but I can't get into it no matter how many times I've tried. I think it's down to the fact that I enjoy more linear stories instead of full-on RPGs, which have so many dialogue choices, quests, location's that just make them feel like a chore to me.
I enjoy games with RPG elements like the souls games, God of war, etc. But witcher 3 is a bit too much for me.
I always get flamed for saying this, but not everyone can like something.

If love is something that you can easily go back to and play again then I would have to say Minecraft.
I used to love to it, but now I would rather stick with fond memories. Willing to play it occasionally but I would rather play other stuff.

I love it but I just wish that the story progression was more clear and easy to follow. Just give me a side tab with current objectives and poi. I learned a bit of the mechanics but I’m just lost all the time in the game.

FF7Re is just such a slap in the face for anyone who loved the original story, lol. “Yeah, you’re playing it again, but now there’s time travel ghosts from the original timeline trying to stop you from changing history because this all happened before which really takes the wind out of the sails of the story… oh, shit, we’re done with the first part and we’re not even out of Midgar? And in the original Sephiroth isn’t mentioned for ten more hours? Ah well, better shoehorn a Cloud v Sephiroth fight in fucking space at the end of this game where it doesn’t belong!”

u/DustyRhodesSplotch Feb 07 '23
Between the weapons breaking every 3 seconds and the horrible interface with cooking, it was tough for me to get into
Can't we just get recipes and say "make 3 of these?". Instead I have to manually put ingredients in my hand every time, wait for the sound, and skip the animation.
9
u/Eaglesun Feb 06 '23
I think it's a good game if you happen to like open world sandbox kind of games, but I personally hated it and think it's a terrible Zelda title and should've been a different IP
9
u/tommyjaybaby Feb 06 '23
I agree, it was a fun game, but it didn’t feel like a Zelda game. No fun weapons to unlock in dungeons, limited variety of enemies, and the dungeons/shrines were all aesthetically the same. Almost felt like a glorified tech demo to me at times.
6
u/alksreddit Feb 06 '23
The enemy variety killed it for me. How can I travel what feels like forever in the map just to get the same guys in the same huts. Oh and look, an intricately hidden chest, it most be holding something excit... ahh, another elemental sword/royal sword.
7
u/SgtHapyFace Feb 06 '23
A sword you can’t even put in your inventory because the game doesn’t let you discard things right from the pick up item prompt. Have to close the chest, decide if there is another disposable weapon worth getting rid of, drop it, reopen the chest and get the item. Repeat for literally every chest in the game. Just awful shit lol. Still love the game tho.

u/KingKPool Feb 06 '23
Tried 5 times to get into it, each time starting a separate playthrough.
I cannot get into it.

u/kenzymarie03 Feb 06 '23
Horizon zero dawn. I mean it’s a beautiful ass game and I’ve played it multiple times and I’ll play it again but it’s very lacking story wise and I can’t get over how uninteresting all the characters are & their faces show no emotion at all
2
u/snoogins46 Feb 07 '23
I agree - I put 10 hours into it and just couldn't care to keep going. It's still installed on my pc and I'll prolly finish it just to make sure I get my money's worth.
6
u/smolgote Feb 06 '23
I got a few that'll crucify me:
Terraria (Don't feel like pulling up a wiki to enjoy it, but despite that I'm willing to give it a try by myself one day so I can go at my own pace)
Dishonored (Stealth felt annoying, but I'm willing to give it another go)
Arkham City (Dunno why this didn't click, but I'll try it again some time)
Destiny 2 (Too liveservicey for me)
4
u/Getschwifty_321 Feb 06 '23
It's still such a bummer what they did to the Destiny series. The recent reviews for it live rent-free in my head, calling out the devs for giving their player base Stockholm syndrome.
It's absolutely worth giving Terraria another chance. One of the last good sandbox games left IMO.
→ More replies (2)3
u/Kerlyle Feb 06 '23
I think Dishonored stealth is just average until you start using all the different powers and abilities. You can finish most of the levels without using any, but once you start using them it becomes a lot funner and more fluid gameplay.

u/Orc_Herpes Feb 07 '23
The Outer Wilds. I can't get past the controls. I got stuck on some planet water planet that was covered with hurricanes or something. I got fed up trying to navigate the area and uninstalled the game.

Skyrim. The combat is absolutely terrible. I get that it's large game, story might be cool, but I just don't enjoy actually playing it.
2
u/1Mn Feb 07 '23
Large game: giant empty map you can spend hundreds of hours exploring to find… different versions of two dungeon types and 4 monsters and writing and voice acting so bad it makes me physically cringe.
3
u/Status_Priority_7408 Feb 06 '23
Alright I’m ready for downvotes:
Mario kart 64, yeah I’m sure it’s way better if you’re used to the controls, but my first Mario kart was Wii, and going from Wii onwards back to 64 or super Mario kart I just can’t get into either. The controls are way to slippery for my liking and I just don’t think it’s fun at all. I’ll give super a break cuz I only played it once but 64 I’ve tried about 5 times now and have hated it every time.
→ More replies (1)3
u/ShadyRAV3N Feb 06 '23
Loved playing Mario Kart 64 as a kid. That being said, its controls did not age well at all. Did not enjoy revisiting it recently. That’s the problem with a lot of games that era when 3D was still new.

u/Excellent_Routine589 Feb 06 '23
Witcher 3
If you’ve played RPGs most of your life, it really doesn’t bring anything special or unique to the table.
The story is pretty good but good lord is it tough to get to it because a bulk majority of the gameplay loop is really dull.
