The quote is from a movie called Donnie Darko. Everybody is making references to it. Not sure why it is posted in this subreddit though

That's the part I'm trying to figure out... Why is it here?
Edit: Ah apparently it was Tolkien who originally said it

It’s here because Tolkien and Edith have a conversation about language in the movie Tokien, in which Tolkien talks about the flow and sound of “cellar door”.

u/Dreyfussy15 Jan 06 '23
No, it's not. It's here because Tolkien called it one of the most beautiful phrases in the English language. Everyone else is just quoting Donnie Darko for lols.

u/Jakelby Jan 06 '23
Is it actually Cellar Door, or is it a pun on cest l'adore (it's love)

u/skarros Jan 06 '23
Would love not be amour? Or can you really make a noun out of the verb adorer? My French sucks, so I don‘t know.

Tolkien based his language, Quenya, out of 'cellar door' because of phonaesthetics.

Donnie Darko (2001 Film), and JRR Tolkien are the frequent misattributions for the origin of the idea that Cellar Door is the most beautiful combination of sounds in the English Language. In fact, a line from Donnie Darko quotes "a famous linguist" with the idea--often, and probably rightly, taken as reference to Tolkien. However, before Darko or Tolkien, it was popularly misattributed to Edgar Allen Poe.
Tolkien only cited the phrase and its reputation as the best known example of a particular linguistic phenomenon. That lecture is considered one of his more significant academic contributions. A casually interested Tolkien fan might have read this lecture as published in The Monsters and the Critics.

“Tolkien” was a great film. The fever dream that he has in no-mans land during the battle of the Somme was very well done.

First of all, Papa Smurf didn't create Smurfette. Gargamel did. She was sent in as Gargamel's evil spy with the intention of destroying the Smurf village. But the overwhelming goodness of the Smurf way of life transformed her.
And as for the whole gang-bang scenario - It just couldn't happen. Smurfs are asexual. They don't even have reproductive organs under those little white pants.
That's what's so illogical, you know, about being a Smurf. What's the point of living... if you don't have a dick?

I like selcouth. It's archaic but I just like how it sounds. I always use it as my surname in RPGs.
On the other end of the spectrum, soggy and moist can fuck off.
