Which Character do you relate to most? Other

u/skepticalscribe Jan 09 '23
Is the social and rebel columns new? I’m only used to L-N-C
42
u/BigLittleBrowse Jan 09 '23
Not new, but certainly not the mainstream. I believe they're supposed to be inbetweens, and where your own morals are less personal, and more a reflection of society.
Lawful: Follows a personal code, as well as the code of society.
Social: Follows the code of society, more than a personal code
Rebel: Subverts the code of society, might still follow a personal code
Chaotic: Follows no code, not even their own. They still think before they act, but they make their mind up in the moment with present information.9

This is a really great way to put it. I screenshot it for future reference. 😁

u/the-bearcat Jan 09 '23
Wouldn't true neutral be Tom bombadil, because he had no opinion on the ring and only really cared about his wife and being a hospitable host
6
u/Klem54 Jan 09 '23
Technically speaking the ring corrupts using the owners own desires for power so if a character was completely unaffected then they would be the ultimate "good".
6
u/the-bearcat Jan 09 '23
Wasn't Gandalf whole argument against giving bombadil the ring was that Tom would have no interest and would probably just lose it
3
u/Comment_Goblin Goblin Jan 10 '23
Who needs the ring of power when you've got that sweet sweet Goldberry?

u/Lucius-Halthier Jan 09 '23
Thou is evil but somehow lawful
5
u/Over9000Kek Dwarf Jan 09 '23
Yeah, Lawful Evil is 100% a thing. Check out the D&D 3.5 srd for descriptions of each. They'll shed light on the 9 alignments.

u/CIeaverBot Jan 09 '23
Yeah, even a random assignment might have gotten more spots right than this.
But it's a nice post for discussion.
Also, wtf are "social, rebel, moral, impure" categories supposed to be? In-betweens?
27
u/duskfinger67 Jan 09 '23
The last time I saw something like this, it was along these lines:
Lawful: Follow's a Strict Personal Code
Social: Follows the code of others
Neutral: Doesn't live by a strict code
Rebel: Actively avoids following the rules laid out
Chaotic: Appears to follow a code, but does not stick to it
Moral and Impure are much more clear interpolations between Good and Evil, where a moral person might generally do the right thing but be fallible, whereas a Neutral character might simply not to bad things but not seek out good things.

That's always an issue with these types of post. They rarely get anything right. I think the issue is tied to the fact that they have to fill each category with a single character, and not every story has that category, and more often than not, many characters fit in the same category.

Gollum is chaotic neutral lmao

The rock and pool, is nice and cool, so juicy sweet. Our only wish, to catch a fish,so juicy sweet.

u/Reynyan Jan 09 '23
We are missing Legolas, and while I may not agree with some of the placements overall I think this is a nice addition to the sub. In particular I appreciate that a certain battering ram doesn’t appear! I’m probably Lawful Neutral on your scale.

u/petervannini Jan 09 '23
I really don’t think I would put the word “lawful” anywhere near Sauron. The descriptions he is given in movies but especially the books makes clear how deceptive and sly he is. Never mind how atrocious his deeds are.
28
Jan 09 '23
I always thought lawful on these DND things meant something like consistent. Sauron is obviously evil, but at least he's consistent.
I'm probably completely wrong because I'm not an expert on Tolkien and I know fuck all about DND.
12
u/e2c-b4r Jan 09 '23
I heard the same. It's about having a code and following it. Being lawful doesn't even make sense if you think about it as following laws since as an Authoritarian you can change the laws anyways
22
u/Hufa123 Jan 09 '23
Saron definitely is lawful evil. He wants to dominate everything and force his rules onto everyone. Compare that to Morgoth, who just wanted to destroy the world, which makes him chaotic.

Bilbo, but only in the sense that I would use a magic artifact capable of causing the destruction of the entire world to get out of social gatherings

Treebeard isn't True Neutral, he absolutely picks a side. He's just slow.
19
u/Mugtra Jan 09 '23
Yes but he only picks a side when it comes to the fate of nature/arda, otherwise he stays out of conflicts not affecting him. Therefore, he's the most true neutral you can feasibily be.

How Pippin isn’t the choice for chaotic moral, I’ll never know.
As for who I relate to most, I’m not sure. If I were to assess my character, maybe some combination of Merry, Eomer and Denethor.

I disagree with a few of these, especially the ghost king in the evil row(can’t remember his name). I’d say he’s more like “impure” since he does agree to fulfill his oath in the end
But I digress. Definitely Pippin cause I myself am a goof, a fool, and somehow also fully capable
