How is this wholesome?!? This is extremely nerve wracking for players/coaches/refs, and extremely stupid and unsafe. I personally never played beyond college, but even then, had anyone run onto the field and come near me, I was swinging. Running onto the field is illegal, unsafe, and stupid.

u/1dkeating Feb 06 '23
with swinging i assume you mean punching them? that is a bit over the top

You have no idea what that person is going to do, what their mental state is, what weapons they may have…ask Monica Seles about people jumping on the playing surface.

Weapons? Don't stadiums have security checkpoints, metal detectors, bag X-rays, etc?

They also have security surrounding the field to prevent runners.

We stopped at a greyhound racing track.
On the way in, we saw a very elderly man as the security guard. My stepbrother leaned over and said,"Careful, security is really tight here!"

Firstly, weapons don't have to be metal. Nor do they need to be deadly to not want to be assaulted by one.
Secondly, I can't speak for all stadiums, but my local stadium does not do bag x-rays. They have someone open your bag and shuffle through it. Barely.
The checkpoints beyond the entrance are just to check your ticket to see if you are allowed on the level you're trying to enter. They don't serve a security purpose beyond that.

u/GroundStateGecko Feb 06 '23
I'm a little surprised. In my country there are laws saying gathering places more than some number of people must have those safety measures.
7
u/koviko Feb 06 '23
Yeah, the fact that there's anything at all is probably due to laws. But until they have a major incident, you can expect them to consider what they have to be "good enough."
I've seen lots of fights start in the stadium, but never seen or heard anyone get stabbed or shot, yet you go a few miles in any direction and you'll find dudes selling drugs.
Either people, like, respect the sanctity of football, or the fact that security is present at all means it's not worth the risk to bring a metal weapon when you already paid for a ticket. My guess is the latter. Money's a pretty good motivator.
25
u/TheDrMonocle Feb 06 '23
Haha bro airports barely stop weapons getting through. You think a stadium would be better?

I would like to add that I went to a concert a few months ago, literally no security checks were being done, I didn't go through a metal detector, no wand, no bag check, dump your pockets, nothing. And also note that this guy pulled something out of his pocket, who knows what that was? Probably just his phone and wanted a selfie, but could've been a taser or other weapon

Just as he runs onto the field you can see him grab an object out of his pocket. It's pretty much impossible to make out what it is in the video, let alone if this guy was running at you in real life.
Would you like to take that risk with the amount of crazies walking around? I know I wouldn't.

106

In the words of Jim Jeffries “you think a lot of yourself if you think everyone is out to murder you and your family”.
Rest of the first world is just a bit more chill mate, fewer guns, fewer kids getting shot up in school, better mental health care, more banter and less aggression.

It’s like a restraining order. You could still get within 100 yards of that person, but in the event you are caught, the punishment will just be worse. They’d probably get you for Criminal Trespassing or whatever the legal team wants to pursue for being cheeky. (depending on country and advances in legal protections)
