That’s us. But the turtle is the universe.

u/gofynono Feb 06 '23
Upon it's back are four elephant

u/AsherthonX Feb 06 '23
I love how in one of his books someone repels of the edge of the world and actually sees the 4 good boys

u/dethblud Feb 06 '23

It makes my head hurt when I think about that turtle being it’s own entire universe. There are little sentient creatures living on that thing, probably for generations in their own little timeline. They likely can’t conceive of life beyond this turtle shell.
Then I think about the concept of aliens, and an extraterrestrial species looking down on us like this. They don’t care to interfere with us because our existence is too minuscule for meaningful consideration.
Trippy man.
86
u/Narrow_Competition41 Feb 06 '23
Now extrapolate that to us. How do we know that we're not in fact floating on the back of a giant space going turtle??? 🤔
60
u/MinimumPositive Feb 06 '23
As the turtle grows, those little beings wonder why the grass furthest away seems to move away from them faster than the rest.
37
u/Reatona Feb 06 '23
That's why they have concluded that the universe is expanding. Turtle physics is a thing.
24
u/MinimumPositive Feb 06 '23
Ironically enough, I've been unable to conceptualize that theory since I first heard it. This little brain exercise just made it firmly click though.

u/andreasbeer1981 Feb 06 '23
Or wonder about the cosmos on our skins. And hairs. And eyeballs. And orifices. And the gut.

Yep. Hinduism reverse the turtle if I'm not mistaken. And in the Americas, many cultures believe the turtle represents creation/health/fertility/virility...men in some cultures will eat the eggs believing it gives sexual virility/fertility.

When I saw the moss I immediately pictured a tiny village of tiny hobbits.

What you can't see is that underneath the disc of growth are 4 elephants standing on the back of the turtle.

Ancient Indigenous tribes in North America actually called North America "Turtle Island".
34
u/whereisascott Feb 06 '23
Not so Ancient. Many indigenous people still refer to it as turtle island.

This may not be healthy for the turtle. My wife and I saw a turtle covered in barnacles. He was also suffering from redtide. The surf kept flipping him over. We called Florida Fish and Wildlife. They picked him up and gave him freshwater baths for a month and then released him. We got pictures before and after.

u/Fizzwidgy Feb 07 '23
This is what I was wondering, but everyone keeps making the same dumb joke about Avatar.
Though, I imagine the barnacles and algae are much worse for a turtles health than some moss.
Still wonder though.

Reminds me of the native creation myth about the world being on the back of a giant turtle. Does anyone know this one? It's been years since I've heard it and would love to hear it again if anyone knows or has a link.

Long ago, the creator flooded everything on earth to start life anew. Few animals survived, marine animals, and waterfowl. Wesakedjak, a benevolent trickster, asked the animals to swim to the bottom of the ocean to retrieve soil that will recreate the earth.
One by one the animals dove deep, but returned with nothing. Finally, Muskrat resurfaced with a pile of wet soil in his paws. The dive was too much for muskrat, who didn't survive, but their journey was not in vain. Wesakedjak took the soil and placed it on turtle's back. This is how turtle island came to be.

"See the TURTLE of enormous girth! On his shell he holds the earth. His thought is slow but always kind; he holds us all within his mind. On his back all vows are made; he sees the truth but mayn't aid. He loves the land and loves the sea, And even loves a child like me."

Here we learn to control the tailed beast.
Reading through the comments, I also now realize how common the “turtle island” theme is.

Is this uncomfortable for them? I know the shell has nerve endings so I wonder how all the plant bits interact with the turtle bits

Philosophical ideals aside, doesn't that hurt the turtle? Like, I wouldn't want shit growing on my back.
